A lot of people ask us what type of paint they should use when repainting a room at home. Most people get confused when purchasing paint because they are given too many options; flat, high gloss, satin, or eggshell finish? Which one should you choose and will it make a noticeable difference?
Depending on what room in the house you’re repainting, the type of finish is very important, and YES you will be able to tell a difference!
Flat, high gloss, satin, or eggshell finish are simply the degree of light being reflected from the painted surface. Basically, it describes how “shiny” the walls appear.
Here are a few tips for what finish to use in which room(s):
- High Gloss finishes look best on kitchen or bathroom walls, kitchen cabinets, banisters and railings, trim, furniture, door jambs and window sills.
- Semi-gloss is also good to use in both kitchen and bathrooms, but also works well in hallways and bedrooms, doors and trim.
- Satin and eggshell finishes are very similar and can be used the same, for the most part. I would recommend using this particular finish throughout the bedrooms, halls, and other rooms such as offices and playrooms.
